Your Wig Smell Questions Answered: Fish, Chemicals & How to Fix It

Q: Help! My brand new wig smells like fish. Is it fake hair?

A: Not necessarily! This is actually a common issue with genuine human hair wigs, particularly those that have been mass-produced. The fishy smell usually comes from industrial acid baths used to strip the hair cuticle, adhesives and glues used in wig construction, and chemical treatments during processing.

The Fix: Try the apple cider vinegar soak method or read this comprehensive guide: https://www.ailsas.com/blogs/news/why-do-human-hair-wigs-smell

Q: My wig only smells bad when it gets wet. Why?

A: This is SO common, especially for us Brits dealing with constant drizzle! Human hair is porous - chemical residues and odour molecules get trapped in tiny gaps. When the hair gets wet, it swells and forces these trapped gases out, making the smell much stronger.

Q: Is a chemical smell normal for a new wig?

A: Yes! A slight chemical or plastic smell is completely normal for brand-new wigs from sanitization treatments and dyes. The good news: This smell almost always disappears after one or two washes with a quality sulfate-free shampoo.

Q: My wig smells like corn chips or mildew. What's going on?

A: This is bacteria or mold growth - and it needs immediate attention! This happens when the wig is stored whilst still damp, kept in a humid environment (bathrooms are the worst!), or when sweat and oils build up without regular washing. The UK Problem: Our damp climate makes this especially common.

The Fix:

1. Wash the wig immediately with a baking soda bath

2. Ensure it's 100% dry before storing (this can take 24-48 hours in UK weather)

3. Store in a well-ventilated area, never in a bathroom
